Sowing instructions Sowing time: March to May indoors or from May directly outdoors. Germination period: 14-21 days at temperatures between 18-22 °C. Seeding depth: Cover with about 0.5-1 cm of fine soil. Substrate: Loose, humus-rich and permeable; slightly sandy is ideal. Location: Sunny to semi-shady; warm places preferred. Pouring: Regularly, but moderately; avoid waterlogging. Planting distance: 30-40 cm, as the plant can reach a height of up to 120 cm. Note: Young plants are sensitive to cold - if sown early, a sheltered location or pre-cultivation indoors is recommended. Harvesting, use & storage The flowering period is between June and September. Leonurus japonicus "Weil®nurus" grows to a height of 80-120 cm and produces rich whorls of flowers that are just as decorative in herb gardens as they are in herbaceous borders. It is mainly the above-ground parts of the plant that are harvested during flowering and can be used fresh or dried - classically as tea or extract. To dry, hang the plant parts in an airy, shady place and then store in well-sealed containers. Tips & tricks for hobby gardeners Pruning: Prune back vigorously after flowering to keep the plant vital and compact. Winter protection: Hardy in mild regions, protect with foliage or mulch in colder locations. Combination: Harmonizes well with medicinal and aromatic plants such as sage, hyssop or lemon balm. Self-seeding: Tends to self-seed - remove inflorescences in good time for controlled stands. Pot culture: Suitable for large pots with good drainage; ideal on patios or balconies. Worth knowing ✨ Leonurus japonicus belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is native to China, Korea and Japan. There it has been used for centuries in traditional medicine as "Yi Mu Cao" - literally "herb for the mother" - in particular to support cardiac and gynecological medicine. Its active ingredients, including alkaloids and essential oils, have made it an important medicinal plant in TCM. In Europe, too, the related Leonurus cardiaca (common motherwort) is used as a medicinal herb. Symbolically, the plant stands for vitality, healing and endurance. Ecologically, it is a valuable insect magnet: The purple-pink flowers attract bees, bumblebees and butterflies and contribute to biodiversity in the garden. With "Weil®nurus" gardening enthusiasts get a cultivated version of a traditional plant that combines medicinal history and modern garden aesthetics.
