I needed something inexpensive but adequate to hold fire wood I create when I trim trees and bushes around my home. We live in south central Texas, so we burn the fireplace about 6 or 7 times a winter; the rest of the time it’s too warm here. But I do save the larger branches when I trim trees and shrubs to burn in the fireplace. They looks messy just piled up in the back of the yard and my wife never wanted to go that far to get the wood, so we purchased this log holder so we could clean up the mess and have the wood right on the patio by the back door. When I was first assembling it, I thought it was going to be too flimsy. But when everything was done and tightened up, it holds up fine. The bulk of the weight is pushing down on the base which is very sturdy and very little pushes out on the outside uprights. The base sits up about 3 inches so you can use a blower to clean under the holder. It sits on hard plastic inserts in each of the legs, except that one of those was missing in my package. I didn’t bother with it and just completed the build without the missing piece. It rained a good bit a day after we set this up. Some say the water pools in the top of the loose cover, but it did not do that to mine. Instead it pushed the cover down a good bit and the water ran out. If it were 100% full of wood that might make it pool on top. I’m thinking about buying a 1×12 and cutting it to 4 feet and using heavy zip ties to secure it to the top so the cover doesn’t sag down so much. The cover is wider than the holder so that you can store logs longer than 13″, which I understand is the common fireplace cut.I don’t expect it to last forever, but I hope it holds up for a few years. I have used outdoor furniture with that black powered coating baked on, and it always begins to flake off after a couple of years due to rust. We’ll have to wait and see but that wouldn’t surprise me. Right now it looks great. If you have a lower space you want to use because you don’t have many logs to store, the side uprights are in two pieces each. You don’t have to use the bottom side extensions and can only use the top pieces to reduce the height of the unit to about 18″ instead of 36″.Instructions are easy to follow and I used the cheap tools that were included without any problem. It took me about 30 minutes to complete the assembly.
